I am almost certain that the families that claim financial matters as the leading cause of stress in their relationships have not had to deal with a dog that sheds as much as my “Duke.” It makes perfect sense to me that a dog with a heavy coat would shed some of it after the cold winter going into a hot summer.  This would be a great example of something that makes me think of the term “function anatomy” if it’s not for the fact that my dog “Duke” sheds all the time.

Duke is a rescue Labrador mix with an extremely thick coat that seems to shed in clumps year round. It didn’t matter how much we used to vacuum and clean the house, there was still pet hair everywhere to the point that it was difficult to invite friends over for a game night or to watch the football game. My brother who has a very mild dog allergy would start wheezing after a few hours at my house. Needless to say, Duke’s shedding was causing us extreme stress.

I can go through a list of products that I discovered to clean and vacuum with that used to make my house spotless for about an hour or two but instead I will go over the steps that I had to take that actually provided a more useful longer-lasting solution. the most helpful thing by far is regular brushing to remove the access hair. I can’t begin to tell you how beneficial it is to brush duke with the Furminator Deshedding tool 5 minutes in the morning and again 5 minutes in the evening. If this is the only thing that I did, most of my problems would have been solved. brushing regularly removes all the loose hair that was about to fall and leaves the coat looking nice and shiny. I find it best to walk outside in the yard twice a day and spend a few minutes brushing along with the direction of the hair growth. This way I keep as much of the fur as possible outside the house and duke loves the few minutes of extra attention he gets. He really does look forward to our daily ritual.

In addition to daily brushing, I have found that certain vitamins and supplements can also help reduce the shedding and keep the fur looking nice and shiny. Shed Terminator for dogs is a great product that contains a good combination of Omega 3 and various other useful oils, minerals, antioxidants and vitamins that also helps reduce unwanted shedding and leaves the coat looking healthy. A separate product called Shed Terminator for cats is also available. many sources of Omega 3 fatty acids such as super Pure Omega 3, Brite coat XS, and Be Well have shown to be helpful for some in keeping the skin and coat healthy.

If shedding has been a source of stress for you it is very important to get your dog or cat examined by a veterinarian to rule out any other underlying causes. Some fungal infections, allergies, parasites, as well as a host of other conditions could be causing the shedding. If all the tests come back negative, then 10 minutes a day with the Furminator De-Shedding tool will be one of the best things you can do to reduce the amount stress experienced as a result of loose pet hair flying around the inside of your house, and strengthen the bond you have with your trusted “best friend.”
